Overview
Acrylics are polymers of methyl methacrylate (PMMA). The most important properties for acrylic (PMMA) are its optical clarity, low UV sensitivity, and overall weather resistance. Sheet (PMMA) became prominent during World War II for aircraft glazing.
Acrylic continues as a glass substitute in windows and security glazing, lighting fixtures, outdoor signage, and skylight. It is also used in point of purchase displays (POP), fixtures, and office partitions. In appropriate thicknesses it is used in machine guards and basketball backboards. It is also FDA accepted for contact with food.
